International and Interdisciplinary Track
UCF Summer Faculty Development Conference
May 5 – May 8, 2009

The UCF Office of International Studies (OIS) requests proposals from UCF faculty for participation in the International-Interdisciplinary Track of the UCF Summer Faculty Development Conference. This track is an intensive series of seminars and workshops intended to promote adding an international or interdisciplinary dimension to UCF programs through curriculum enhancements or the development of fundable proposals for international and/or interdisciplinary research. Participants will receive a stipend of $800 for full (four days) participation and submission of the appropriate deliverable.

The overall focus of the 2009 Summer Faculty Conference will be on learning activities that nurture student creativity and imagination, while at the same time furthering the internationalization of curriculum and research at UCF.  Effective internationalization creates an awareness of the local context, and its relationships, similarities and differences from other national contexts, as well as awareness of global forces and processes that operate past national borders, such as global economic or environmental processes.

CURRICULUM ENHANCEMENT
The International Track will accept proposals for curriculum enhancement as follows:

  1. Modules
These are self-contained lesson plans that include structured content that can be integrated into an existing or new course. The modules are expected to facilitate the addition of a small set of learning outcomes in areas including (but not limited to) regional geographies, international politics, global environmental processes, dealing with diverse cultures or intercultural communication.  The module must include outcomes and assessment methodologies, suggested class activities for achieving the outcomes, as well as suggested readings and resources.  Priority will be provided for modules that can be delivered as part of a study abroad.  Modules produced and paid by the conference will be made available to other faculty interested in internationalizing their courses.

  2. New courses to enhance existing academic programs
The proposed new course will be evaluated in terms of the quality of the proposed learning outcomes, fit with the content of existing curriculum, and perceived potential to enhance the program by adding an international dimension.  Preference will be given to new courses that can be included in the following programs: courses intended to be delivered as part of a UCF administered Study Abroad; Area Studies (Asian; Middle Eastern; Latin America, Caribbean and Latino; European); World Comparative Studies Minor, International and Global Studies, and General Education Program.

  3. Course revisions
Proposals for course revisions will require a detailed description of the changes that are being proposed, including a list of new learning outcomes, activities and resources.  Priority will be given to proposals that involve the addition of appropriate technologies to achieve the new outcomes, those that combine international and experiential learning components, and those that involve interdisciplinary collaborations.
RESEARCH
UCF faculty may also submit proposals for the development of projects that involve topics that are global or international, or activities that will be performed outside the US.  Priority will be given to faculty participating in the Summer Conference for the first time; teams composed of faculty from different disciplines or departments; and proposals with research that involve undergraduate students or experiential learning.

Participants will be required to attend the entire four-days and, at the conclusion of the program, submit the appropriate deliverable, as well as the appropriate follow-up required to implement the deliverable.  Research proposals developed as part of the conference must follow-up the process through the UCF Office Research and Commercialization.

Proposals Submitted by Teams
The team leader must include the list of all participants, as well as an explanation of the team structure and expected benefits from applying as a team. However, each member of a team must submit a separate application with a consistent project description. Teams may be subject to restrictions on the size or the amount of money available to any one team.

Final Decisions are anticipated to be made by March 6, 2009
